Castle Tioram is a ruined medieval fortress on the tidal island of Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart on Scotland’s west coast. It functioned as a stronghold and residence for west Highland chiefs and is an important local clan site.

The ruin consists of collapsed and standing masonry on a small rocky island, offering close coastal views and a dramatic shoreline setting. The castle fabric visible today includes the remains of curtain walls and internal structures concentrated on the island’s summit.

The site originated in the medieval period and was a principal seat of the Clanranald branch of Clan Donald (MacDonald). It remained in use as a fortified residence across the later medieval and early modern periods and fell into ruin thereafter.

Eilean Tioram lies in Loch Moidart, within the Moidart area of western Scotland. The castle is offshore from the mainland and visible from the surrounding lochside roads and small coastal settlements.

• Tidal islet access: Positioned on a tidal islet, the ruin is most easily approached at low tide; access conditions vary with weather and sea levels.

There is no public road access; Castle Tioram sits on Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart. Boat trips from nearby ports (such as the village of Acharacle or other Moidart slipways) provide the usual access. Walking access depends on tides and local conditions; consult local boat operators or guides.
