The Castle of San Sebastián is a coastal fortress on a small rocky promontory at the eastern end of La Caleta beach in Cádiz, Spain, with its main structure dating to the 18th century. It stands apart from the shoreline and is linked to the city by a narrow pedestrian causeway.
The site offers close-range views of La Caleta and the Bay of Cádiz from its ramparts and walkways, with visible gun emplacements and defensive walls typical of coastal artillery forts. The compact fortification is often photographed from the promenade and nearby beaches for its coastal setting and silhouette against the sea.
The present fortress was constructed in the 18th century on earlier defensive foundations to strengthen Cádiz’s seaward defenses; it was used historically as an artillery battery protecting the city and harbour. Over time the structure has been restored and repurposed for public access and cultural uses.
Located at the end of La Caleta beach in Cádiz, the castle sits within the city’s historic central district, a short walk from Cádiz’s old town and waterfront promenades.

How to Get to Castle of San Sebastián #
The Castle of San Sebastián sits at the end of the narrow promontory reached from Cádiz’s La Caleta beach. From Cádiz old town walk east along the Paseo de la Caleta (about 600-900 m, roughly 10-15 minutes on foot) to the causeway leading to the fortress. Driving/parking in the immediate area is limited; if coming by car from central Cádiz it’s a very short drive (around 1 km) onto Avenida Duque de Nájera/ Paseo de la Caleta.

- Visit at sunrise or sunset for the best light and fewer crowds; mid-afternoon sees most beach traffic.
- Access the fortress via the pedestrian causeway from La Caleta beach/Paseo de la Caleta rather than trying to approach from the seafront road.
