Castle Campbell is a historic hilltop castle set above the village of Dollar in central Scotland, associated with the Campbell family. The surviving ruins include a vaulted tower and range buildings dating mainly to the 15th and 16th centuries.
The site served as a stronghold and country seat of the Campbells, with adaptations over successive centuries reflecting domestic and defensive needs. Visitors encounter exposed masonry, a central tower house and terraced approaches rather than a fully intact castle interior.
Castle Campbell stands on a rocky prominence above the valley of the River Devon in Clackmannanshire, within easy reach of local roads serving the town of Dollar.
- Location and name: Historically known as Castle Gloom, the site occupies a defended ridge above the village of Dollar and offers views down the River Devon valley.
How to Get to Castle Campbell #
Castle Campbell sits above Dollar, about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Stirling and 20 miles (32 km) from Edinburgh by road. From Dollar village centre a clearly signed path through Dollar Glen leads up to the castle (allow 20-30 minutes on foot). By public transport, regular buses run from Stirling and Alloa to Dollar; from the bus stop it’s a 10-20 minute walk to the Glen entrance.
Tips for Visiting Castle Campbell #
- Approach via the Dollar Glen footpaths for the most dramatic view - the path from Dollar is about a 20-30 minute walk and winds past waterfalls.
- Bring a jacket even on sunny days; the ravine funnels wind and shade makes it noticeably chillier.
- Check Historic Environment Scotland's site for seasonal opening times and events; some interiors close in winter.
- Don't miss the soot-blackened chimney breast in the great hall - a tiny human mark that tells you how the castle actually lived.
Best Time to Visit Castle Campbell #
Best visited late spring to early autumn for walking access and longer opening hours; winters can be damp, windy, and some rooms closed.
