Castell Coch
Castle 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built on medieval ruins
Built as a 19th-century Gothic revival folly above Cardiff, Castell Coch presents red-brick turrets, ornate Victorian interiors, and dramatized medieval rooms. Visitors tour the furnished chambers and enjoy woodland walks below the hill.
Castell Coch is a small 19th-century Gothic Revival castle near Cardiff in Wales, built as a romantic reconstruction on the site of a medieval fortification. Its late Victorian rebuilding is an important example of the Gothic Revival carried out by architect William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute.
The structure stands on the remains of a medieval fortification; the present appearance dates from a late 19th-century reconstruction by William Burges commissioned by John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. Burges and his team completed extensive decorative work inside and rebuilt the castle as a romantic interpretation of medieval architecture.
Sited above the village of Tongwynlais in the Taff Gorge, Castell Coch lies about 8 km north of Cardiff city centre and is visible from the A470 corridor.
- Access and management: Managed by Cadw and typically open to the public with timed entry; photography is allowed around the exterior and in many interior rooms.
- Viewing points: Best short viewpoints are the roadside approach and the footpaths in the Taff Gorge, which give close-up views of the red sandstone towers and wooded setting.
What to See #
- Interiors (Banqueting hall and Drawing room): Late 19th-century interiors by William Burges feature richly painted ceilings, carved woodwork and bespoke furniture in compact, interconnected rooms including the banqueting hall and drawing room.
- Exterior defences and towers: A fortified gate, circular towers and curtain walls set on a wooded hillside form the exterior ensemble; the site includes access paths that give close views of the battlements and roofline.
- Kitchens and service rooms: Walled service areas and restored medieval-style kitchens show Victorian interpretations of medieval domestic spaces and original nineteenth-century fittings.
How to Get to Castell Coch #

Tips for Visiting Castell Coch #
- Check Cadw opening times and, in summer weekends, book tickets or expect queues-arriving at opening or late afternoon helps avoid day-trip crowds from Cardiff.
- Approach on foot via the well-marked Tongwynlais paths rather than trying to navigate the narrow access road; take time to admire the Victorian interiors and then walk the battlements for views across the Taff valley, which many visitors overlook.
Best Time to Visit Castell Coch #
Visit in late spring to early autumn for milder weather and the best chance of seeing the castle and gardens at their most attractive.
