Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo is the historic district of Panama City, originally developed in the late 17th century and recognised for its colonial-era streets and plazas. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Casco Viejo was established on a small peninsula in the early 1670s after the older inland settlement was destroyed, and it served as Panama City’s administrative and commercial core through the 18th and 19th centuries. Restoration and conservation efforts over recent decades have rehabilitated many historic buildings and repurposed them for cultural and tourism uses.

Sited on a peninsula projecting into Panama Bay, Casco Viejo sits adjacent to Panama City’s modern downtown and overlooks the Pacific entrance to the bay.

• Founding period: The district was rebuilt on a rocky peninsula from the early 1670s after the original settlement was attacked and sacked in 1671.

• Plaza de la Independencia: Plaza de la Independencia is a major public square framed by colonial buildings and museums, often used for markets and public events.
• Plaza de Francia: Plaza de Francia and the seafront promenade provide views across the entrance to Panama Bay and show monuments to the city's colonial past.
