The Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom are a series of archaeological sites in northeast China preserving remains of the Koguryo (Goguryeo) state, which flourished from the 1st century BCE to the 7th century CE. The property is inscribed for its well-preserved capitals, fortresses and tombs.

Across multiple sites visitors can see the remains of walled cities and fortifications, earthen and stone defensive works, and burial mounds; several tombs contain painted murals illustrating elite life and funerary rites. Sites are spread across the border region of Jilin and Liaoning provinces and are visited as archaeological parks and museum displays.

The monuments were built by rulers of the Koguryo kingdom between roughly the 1st century BCE and the 7th century CE to serve as capitals, administrative centers and royal tombs. The kingdom ceased to exist as an independent polity after 668 CE when it was conquered by allied Tang and Silla forces.

The serial sites lie in northeast China, principally within present-day Jilin and Liaoning provinces, and are concentrated around several ancient city-sites and cemetery complexes referenced in historical records.

  • UNESCO World Heritage site: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage serial property for its archaeological remains that document the Koguryo kingdom's political and funerary architecture.
  • Murals in royal tombs: Many tombs within the property contain well-preserved murals showing hunting scenes, banquets and mythological motifs dating to the Koguryo period.
