How to Get to Capiatá
Capiatá sits just southeast of Asunción and is most easily reached via Asunción's Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) or by intercity bus from Asunción's main bus terminal. There is no regular passenger rail service; buses and taxis are the practical options for the final leg.
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU): The country’s main international gateway in Luque, serving Asunción. From ASU to Capiatá the fastest option is a taxi or airport transfer (about 25-45 minutes depending on traffic). Expect taxi fares in the range of PYG 100,000-150,000 and transfers to downtown Asunción take ~20-30 minutes; from downtown you can continue to Capiatá by local bus or taxi (see Bus section).
Guaraní International Airport (AGT): Located near Ciudad del Este, this airport is much farther (eastern Paraguay) and only useful if your itinerary includes the Alto Paraná region. Ground travel from AGT to Capiatá is a long drive (around 4-5 hours) - most people fly or bus to Asunción first and then continue west.
Train: Paraguay currently has no regular long-distance passenger rail service, so trains are not a practical option for reaching Capiatá.
Bus: Intercity and local buses are the primary way to reach Capiatá. Buses run between the Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción and stops in Capiatá with journey times typically 30-50 minutes depending on traffic; fares are low (commonly a few thousand paraguayan guaraní). Capiatá has local bus stops and small terminals where you can disembark - ask the driver or terminal staff if unsure which bus serves the town centre.
How to Get Around Capiatá
The most practical way to get around Capiatá is by a mix of intercity bus and short taxi or app-hail rides; buses are cheap but slower, taxis and remises are faster and more comfortable. Walking works well inside the town centre, while bicycles are OK for short trips if you stick to quieter streets.
- Intercity bus (PYG 2,000-6,000) - Frequent minibuses and buses link Asunción (Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción) with Capiatá; trips normally take about 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. Buses are cheap and a common choice for commuters-buy tickets at the terminal or pay on board for smaller services. Expect basic vehicles and possibly crowded conditions at peak times; keep small change ready.
- Local buses (colectivos) (PYG 500-2,000) - Within the metropolitan area, colectivos and municipal buses cover short routes between neighbourhoods and into Capiatá. They are the cheapest option but can be slow and make many stops-useful for short hops if you have time and light luggage. Routes are informal in some areas, so ask locals or drivers which vehicle goes to your destination.
- Taxis / Remises (PYG 40,000-150,000) - Taxis and remises (radio-dispatched private cars) are widely available and convenient for door-to-door trips, especially when carrying luggage or arriving late. Negotiate or confirm the fare before you start; from central Asunción to Capiatá expect a fixed-fare range and journey times around 30-45 minutes. Use remises for more predictable pricing and safer fixed routes.
- Ride-hailing (InDriver / apps) (PYG 30,000-120,000) - App-based services such as InDriver operate in the Asunción metro area and can be a good alternative to taxis for comfort and price comparison. Availability is best closer to Asunción; in more peripheral neighbourhoods you may need to wait longer for a match. Check projected fares in the app before accepting - surge pricing can apply at busy times.
- Bicycle (PYG 0-0) - Cycling is possible for short distances inside Capiatá and between nearby neighbourhoods, though dedicated bike infrastructure is limited. Roads can be busy and uneven in places, so stick to quieter streets where possible and avoid riding at night. Bring a lock - theft can be an issue in busier areas.
- Walking - Capiatá's centre is compact enough to explore on foot for short errands, markets and restaurants. Walking is the best way to access local shops and neighbourhood services, but distances between suburbs can be long and sidewalks are intermittent - plan routes with safety in mind and avoid poorly lit streets after dark.
