Cape Verde’s islands are very different from one another. Sal and Boa Vista in the east are flat, sandy and built around beach tourism; São Vicente has the liveliest town; Santiago has the capital; and Santo Antão and Fogo are mountainous and green after the rains. Most remote workers pick one island and stay, because getting between them takes time. This page compares five bases.

The costs below are ballpark figures for a comfortable month for one person: a furnished one-bedroom apartment on a monthly rate, eating out most days, local transport and a social life.

The Bases at a Glance#

Base Island Comfortable month Best months Suits
Santa Maria Sal €1,300 to €1,800 November to June Beach life, kitesurfing, nomad community
Mindelo São Vicente €1,000 to €1,400 November to June Music, culture, town life
Praia Santiago €1,100 to €1,500 November to June City services, healthcare, local life
Sal Rei Boa Vista €1,200 to €1,600 November to June Quiet beaches, wind sports
Santo Antão Santo Antão €800 to €1,100 October to June Hiking, nature, slow life

Santa Maria#

The beach town at the southern tip of Sal is Cape Verde’s tourism hub, with a long white beach, a wooden pier where fishermen land tuna, and kitesurfing and windsurfing at some of the world’s best spots. It has the country’s biggest community of remote workers, many restaurants and bars, and the most international flights from the airport at Espargos, about 20 minutes away. The island is flat and dry, prices are the highest in the country, and the town is busy with package tourists. Healthcare is limited to clinics, with serious cases flown out. See the Santa Maria digital nomad guide.

Mindelo#

The port town on São Vicente is Cape Verde’s cultural capital, the home town of Cesária Évora, with pastel colonial buildings, live music most nights and a famous February carnival. It feels like a real town rather than a resort, has a hospital and an international airport, and is cheaper than Sal. The ferry to Santo Antão makes weekend hikes easy. Beaches near town are limited, and the island is windy and dry.

Praia#

The capital on Santiago is the country’s largest city and its administrative centre, with ministries, embassies, the main hospital, the university and the best range of shops and services. The old centre, the Plateau, sits on a bluff above the sea, and the UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha is a short drive away. It suits people who want city life and local culture over beach tourism. Petty crime is higher than elsewhere, so take care at night.

Sal Rei#

The small main town of Boa Vista is quieter than Santa Maria, with huge empty beaches, sand dunes, kitesurfing and turtle nesting in summer. Most tourists stay in all-inclusive resorts outside town, so Sal Rei itself keeps a village feel. Services, healthcare and nightlife are basic, groceries are expensive, and flights are fewer than on Sal.

Santo Antão#

Cape Verde’s most dramatic island, an hour by ferry from Mindelo, is all mountains, terraced valleys and cliff-top trails. Towns such as Ribeira Grande and Ponta do Sol are small and cheap, with guesthouses and a slow pace. Internet and power are less reliable, healthcare is basic, and there is no airport, so the ferry is the only way in or out. It suits hikers and writers rather than people with heavy video-call schedules.

Choosing Your Base#

  • Start on Sal if you want a ready-made community and easy flights, then try Mindelo for a more local life.
  • Pick one island. Inter-island flights and ferries are slow and get delayed, so frequent hopping eats into work time.
  • Check the internet and power before you rent, especially on Boa Vista and Santo Antão.
  • Think about healthcare. Praia and Mindelo have the main hospitals; elsewhere, serious cases are flown out.
  • Match the wind. Kitesurfers want November to June on Sal or Boa Vista; the windless, humid months of August to October suit divers and swimmers.
