Cape Sōya
Cape Northernmost point of Hokkaido with observation tower
On Hokkaido’s northern shore, Cape Sōya marks Japan’s northernmost point; visitors go for the northern‑point monument, windswept coastal views across the Soya Strait and nearby seafood stands.
Cape Sōya is the northernmost point of Japan located in Wakkanai on the island of Hokkaido, marked by monuments that denote its extreme latitude. It sits at the entrance to the Soya Strait facing the Russian island of Sakhalin.
The headland features lookout platforms and monuments marking the northern extremity of Hokkaido and Japan’s main islands, and it is a local focal point for photographers and day-trippers. The area is also used for seasonal birdwatching and coastal observation.
The site has postwar and modern memorials and markers associated with regional maritime history and border proximity; it functions primarily as a civic landmark rather than a historic fortress or settlement.
Positioned at the northern tip of Hokkaido near the city of Wakkanai, Cape Sōya faces the Soya Strait and is accessible by road from the city.
- Views to Sakhalin: Clear days offer views across the Soya Strait toward Sakhalin and Russian territory to the north.
How to Get to Cape Sōya #
Cape Sōya is the northernmost point of Hokkaido, reached from the city of Wakkanai. Drive or take a local bus north out of Wakkanai along National Route 238 to the cape; there is parking and a short walk from the road/bus stop to the Sōya Monument and viewing area. Wakkanai is served by road and rail connections from southern Hokkaido and local buses within the city.
Tips for Visiting Cape Sōya #
- Go early morning on a clear day from nearby Wakkanai to increase your chances of seeing Sakhalin across the La Pérouse (Soya) Strait; the cape is easily reached by road with parking near the monument.
- Time your visit to avoid local cruise/bus tour arrivals (midday in summer); early or late visits give quieter conditions around the northernmost-point monument and better photography.
- Walk the short area around the monument and nearby observation spots-many visitors see only the landmark plaque and miss the wider coastal views and local memorials nearby.
