Cape Fear (headland)
Cape North Carolina headland marking the Cape Fear inlet
A sandy headland near Wilmington, North Carolina, marking the Cape Fear estuary; visitors drive barrier-island roads, surf, fish, and visit Civil War sites such as Fort Fisher.
Cape Fear is a prominent Atlantic headland on the southeastern coast of North Carolina that marks the entrance to the Cape Fear River. The cape defines the seaward mouth of the estuary that leads to the port of Wilmington.
The coastal zone around the cape includes barrier islands, tidal inlets and extensive shoals offshore known collectively as Frying Pan Shoals. The combination of headland, shoals and tidal channels has made the area historically important and hazardous for shipping; lighthouses and coastal defences have long been associated with the river approaches.
During the American Civil War the mouth of the Cape Fear River and nearby fortifications played a major role in the defense of Wilmington; Fort Fisher guarded the channel and fell to Union forces in January 1865. Since then the area has continued to be important for navigation and coastal management.
Cape Fear sits on the North Carolina coast, roughly south-southwest of Wilmington, and forms the seaward boundary of the Cape Fear River estuary. The headland is adjacent to barrier islands and coastal inlets that link the ocean to the inland waterways.
- Estuary entrance: The headland forms the seaward entrance to the Cape Fear River estuary and is closely associated with the port approaches to Wilmington, North Carolina.
- Navigation hazards: The shoals off the cape are notorious for shifting sediments and hazardous navigation, giving the area a long maritime reputation.
What to See #
- Fort Fisher / Civil War site: A Confederate earthwork and Civil War battlefield defended the approaches to the Cape Fear River mouth; the fortifications were captured by Union forces in January 1865.
- Frying Pan Shoals: A broad shoal system extending seaward from the headland that has long been hazardous to shipping and required extensive navigation aids and dredging for river access.

Tips for Visiting Cape Fear (headland) #
- Aim for early morning or late afternoon at Fort Fisher and the nearby shorelines to capture dramatic light on the mouth of the Cape Fear River and avoid peak beach crowds in summer.
- Combine a visit to the Fort Fisher Historic Site with a short drive/ferry hop to Bald Head Island (ferries operate from Southport) if you want a quieter vantage of the river mouth and lighthouse views.
- If you want to steer clear of the busiest stretches of beach, head east along the shore away from Wilmington and the boardwalks-those stretches are quieter and give better opportunities for coastal walking and birdwatching.
