Caparaó National Park

Caparaó National Park is a protected area in southeastern Brazil that straddles the border between Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais and protects a high mountain massif. One key feature is Pico da Bandeira, which reaches 2,892 m and is one of Brazil’s highest peaks.

The park attracts hikers and naturalists for multi-day trekking routes, summit climbs and high-altitude Atlantic Forest scenery. Trails cross granite ridges and open highland grasslands, and marked approaches lead to viewpoints and mountain saddles.

The protected area was created to conserve the Caparaó massif and its ecosystems and to provide public access for recreation and research. Over time infrastructure for trails and basic visitor support has been developed around trailheads and small towns at the park edge.

Geographically the park sits on a mountainous frontier between the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, with small towns and trailheads at the park margins. The massif rises sharply from surrounding lowlands and forms a distinctive highland block.

• Habitat: High-elevation Atlantic Forest and campos de altitude habitats are a core conservation value, with trails that cross steep granite ridges and cloud forest.
• Visiting season: Best-season access is generally during the dry months when trails are less slippery and summit visibility is higher.

What to See#

• Pico da Bandeira: At 2,892 m this is the park’s highest summit and one of the highest peaks in Brazil; it is a common objective for multi-day hikes and sunrise climbs.

• If you plan to summit Pico da Bandeira, use the Alto Caparaó gateway and start very early so you reach the summit for sunrise - this is the standard approach and avoids afternoon heat and cloud build-up.
• Book park camping/refuge spaces or a local guide in advance for popular weekends and public holidays; parking and shelter capacity are limited and weekend crowds can make the trail and summit busy.
• Don't skip the lower forested trails: many visitors go straight to the peak and miss shorter walks, waterfalls and cooler cloud-forest sections that showcase different scenery and wildlife.
