How to Get Around Caniçal#
Public buses and taxis from Funchal serve Caniçal reliably; renting a car is the most flexible option for exploring Madeira’s east coast and mountain roads.
- Bus (Horários do Funchal) (€2-€6) - Public buses connect Funchal and Santa Cruz with Caniçal and are the cheapest way to travel the east coast. Frequency is reasonable during the day but drops in evenings and on Sundays - check current timetables at the operator’s site or at bus stations.

- Car / Rental (€30+/day) - Hiring a car is the easiest way to explore Madeira beyond Funchal and to reach Caniçal on your own schedule. Roads are scenic but can be steep and narrow in places - drive cautiously and allow extra time for mountain roads.
- Cycling - Road biking on Madeira is challenging due to steep terrain; e-bikes or experienced cyclists can cover local routes but expect climbs and variable weather. Use caution and proper equipment.
