Campo Ma’an National Park is a protected area in Cameroon’s South Region established to conserve coastal and lowland rainforest habitats. The park was created around 2000 to bring former reserves and forestry concessions under a unified protected-area status.
The park contains coastal plains, mangroves and dense lowland rainforest that provide habitat for large mammals and a variety of bird and plant species. It is noted for populations of forest elephant, western lowland gorilla and chimpanzee and is a focus for conservation and limited eco-tourism activities.
Campo Ma’an National Park was designated to protect biodiversity while regulating logging and hunting that previously occurred under different land-use regimes. Since its establishment it has formed part of regional conservation planning linking coastal and inland forest areas.
The park sits in southern Cameroon near the Gulf of Guinea and the country’s border region with Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, covering coastal and inland terrain in the South Region.
- Ecosystems: Protects a mix of lowland rainforest, coastal mangroves and swamp ecosystems that support large mammals and diverse birdlife.
- Wildlife: Home to wildlife such as forest elephants, western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees, making it important for biodiversity conservation in southern Cameroon.
Tips for Visiting Campo Ma'an National Park #
- Plan visits in the dry season (roughly November-March) when forest tracks and access roads are most passable and wildlife sightings are easier along cleared trails.
- Arrange entry and guided visits in advance through an established lodge or the park authority-access is remote and local guides improve chances of wildlife encounters and ensure you use permitted routes.
- Many visitors focus on big mammal drives and miss the coastal mangrove and riverine habitats-ask guides about short community‑run walks or birding trips to see different ecosystems within the park.
