Camirus Archaeological Site

The archaeological site of Camirus (Kamiros) is an ancient Doric city on the northwest coast of the island of Rhodes, Greece, occupied from the Archaic period. It is one of the three principal ancient city-states of Rhodes and preserves a distinctive terraced urban plan.

Excavated ruins include multi-level domestic quarters, a street grid, an agora and an acropolis set on terraces cut into the hillside, with sea views across the Aegean. The layout of houses, drainage channels and public spaces makes the site a clear example of ancient Greek town planning.

Founded around the early first millennium BC by Dorian Greeks, the city prospered through the Archaic and Classical periods. It declined after a sequence of earthquakes and changing fortunes in the Hellenistic and Roman eras and was eventually abandoned as the population shifted to other parts of Rhodes.

The site sits on the northwest coast of Rhodes near the modern coastal settlement known as Kameiros; it is accessible by road from other parts of the island and overlooks the Aegean Sea.

• Best viewing times: Best light for photography is in the morning or late afternoon when the low sun highlights the stone terraces and the view toward the Aegean.
• Visitor note: Site is largely open-air with walked paths over archaeological remains; wear sturdy shoes and respect fenced areas.

What to See#

• City terraces and houses: Ruined urban terraces, houses, streets and an agora showing a planned Doric grid layout with household foundations and drainage channels visible on site.
• Acropolis: Acropolis area containing remains of fortification walls and terraces overlooking the Aegean Sea.
• Necropolis: Outlying necropolis with rock-cut tombs and burial enclosures dating to the Archaic and Classical periods.
• Site museum: Small on-site museum and information panels that display finds and explain the site’s layout and excavation history.

Kamiros is on the northwest coast of Rhodes, about 30-40 km from Rhodes Town. From Rhodes city, drive or take a bus toward the town of Kalavarda and follow signs to Kamiros. The site is accessible by car; parking is available near the entrance.

• Visit early in the morning to avoid the midday sun; the ruins on Rhodes can be hot and exposed.
• Bring a good camera: the ruin's orientation offers dramatic seaside perspectives and archaeological detail.
• Combine a visit with a stop at the small museum on Rhodes that houses finds from Camirus for context.
