Kasos Island

Kasos is a small Greek island in the southern Aegean Sea, administratively part of the South Aegean region. It is one of the lesser-known islands of the Dodecanese archipelago with a long seafaring tradition.

The island offers traditional village settlements, quiet beaches, and an active local maritime culture rather than large-scale tourism infrastructure. Regular ferry connections link Kasos to neighbouring islands such as Karpathos and to Crete, providing the main access routes.

Kasos has been inhabited since antiquity and developed as a local maritime and fishing community across the Ottoman and modern Greek periods. Its economy historically centered on seafaring, fishing and small-scale agriculture.

Geographically Kasos lies in the southern Aegean Sea, south of Karpathos and north of Crete, forming part of the Dodecanese island group. The island is remote compared with major Greek tourist hubs and relies on ferry links for connections.

• Travel in the shoulder seasons (May-June or September-October) to enjoy calmer seas and avoid the peak-summer ferry crush; ferry connections to Kasos are infrequent so book crossings well ahead.
• Arrive by scheduled ferry rather than relying on day trips; once on the island use a scooter or local taxi to reach the small, quiet beaches and inland villages that most day-trippers miss.
• Seek out family-run tavernas and inland settlements away from the port - Kasos's traditional architecture and local festivals are best experienced outside the main harbour area and are quieter early and late in the day.
