How to Get to Caldera
Caldera (Atacama Region) is commonly reached via Copiapó's Desierto de Atacama Airport (CPO) and by regional buses from Copiapó and other coastal cities. Passenger rail is not a dependable scheduled option for travellers; buses and private transfers are the standard.
Desierto de Atacama / Copiapó Airport (CPO): The closest commercial airport to Caldera is Aeropuerto Desierto de Atacama (Copiapó - CPO). Road transfer from Copiapó to Caldera takes about 40-60 minutes by car; taxis or private transfers are common and typically cost CLP 15,000-30,000 depending on service.
La Serena / Antofagasta (regional choices): For different routing options there are larger regional airports (La Serena - LSC or Antofagasta - ANF), but these are much further by road and used less often for Caldera access.
Train: Caldera has historical rail connections (former Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia route) but regular passenger rail services in the region are limited. Do not rely on passenger trains for scheduled travel to Caldera.
Bus: Long‑distance buses connect Caldera with Copiapó and other regional centres; the bus terminal in Caldera serves regular services to Copiapó (about 40-70 minutes) and beyond. Buses are the common public option for arrival and departure.
How to Get Around Caldera #
Caldera is a compact coastal town that is easy to explore on foot around the port and main streets. Taxis and colectivos (shared vans) handle local and regional trips; buses connect Caldera with Copiapó and other towns in the Atacama Region. For day trips to nearby beaches and attractions, check bus schedules in advance and have cash available-services may be limited on weekends and holidays.
