How to Get to Chañaral#
Chañaral is best reached by road from nearby regional airports (Copiapó) or by intercity bus along the Pan-American coastal corridor. Buses are the mainstay of regional travel - frequent, affordable and covering towns that lack rail service.
Desierto de Atacama / Copiapó (CPO): Copiapó’s Desierto de Atacama Airport is the closest commercial airport serving the Atacama Region. From Copiapó there are regular long-distance buses and private transfers to Chañaral; road travel is roughly 2-3 hours depending on service and stops. Bus fares typically range from CLP 6,000-15,000 and private transfers cost more.
La Serena / La Florida (LSC): La Serena is a larger regional airport to the south; travel to Chañaral by intercity bus or private car is substantially longer (often 4-6 hours) and more suited to multi-leg itineraries. Bus companies run scheduled routes along the coast connecting La Serena, Copiapó and smaller towns.
Train: There is no regular long-distance passenger rail service directly serving Chañaral; freight rail exists in parts of the region.
Bus: Intercity buses are the primary public transport mode. Buses connect Chañaral with Copiapó, Caldera and regional cities (journeys typically take 2-4 hours depending on origin). Major bus companies operate departures from central terminals; fares are generally affordable (CLP several thousand) and booking in advance is recommended during high season.
