Caesarea Philippi
Archaeological Site Ancient Greco-Roman archaeological site with temple ruins
At the Banias spring, Caesarea Philippi contains Hellenistic and Roman ruins beside flowing springs; visitors inspect temple foundations, walk archaeological paths and follow streams that feed the Jordan River.
Caesarea Philippi, commonly known today by the Arabic name Banias, is an archaeological and natural site at the base of Mount Hermon in northern Israel. It is noted for a karst spring emerging from a cave and the remains of temples and civic structures built around that spring.
The location preserves Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine remains including temple platforms and carved rock features associated with the cult of Pan and later Roman cult practice. The spring complex forms the source area of the upper Jordan River.
In antiquity the site was renamed Caesarea Philippi by Herod Philip and it sits in a steep limestone landscape at the northern edge of the Hula Basin and the Golan Heights.
- Source of the Jordan: The site sits at the headwaters of the Jordan River where multiple springs emerge, making it hydrologically significant for the region.
- Historic renaming: Known in antiquity as Caesarea Philippi after being renamed by Herod Philip, it combines natural karst spring features with exposed archaeological remains.
What to See #
- Banias spring and cave: The Banias spring and cave area, once associated with the Greek god Pan and later used for Roman and Byzantine temples.
- Roman and Byzantine ruins: Remains of Roman and Byzantine temples, platforms and settlement structures built into the limestone at the base of Mount Hermon.
How to Get to Caesarea Philippi #
Caesarea Philippi (the ruins at Banias) lies at the Banias Nature Reserve at the foot of Mount Hermon in northern Israel. The usual way to reach it is by car from the nearby Golan Heights towns or from the Sea of Galilee area; there is a designated visitor parking area at the reserve and then a short walk (around 10-15 minutes) on marked paths down to the main springs and archaeological remains. Local roads serve the reserve-consult regional maps for the best driving route from your departure point.
Tips for Visiting Caesarea Philippi #
- Approach the site via the Banias (Caesarea Philippi) / Banias Nature Reserve parking area and follow the marked trails to the spring, cave and ruins; the reserve entrance is the standard access point for the archaeological area.
- Plan to visit in spring or early morning when the springs are fullest and the vegetation is at its best; the site can be hot and exposed later in the day, and most interesting features (the grotto, water channels, mosaic remains) are best appreciated with lower light and fewer people.
- Allow time to continue up the nearby trails for views toward Mount Hermon and the Golan Heights-many visitors focus only on the archaeological ruins and miss the broader landscape viewpoints.
