Archaeological Site Archaeological hilltop site of ancient Carthage with ruins
Byrsa hill marks the core of ancient Carthage; visitors explore Punic and Roman ruins, the archaeological museum on the site, and panoramic views over Tunis Bay.
Byrsa is the hill and citadel area at the heart of ancient Carthage in present-day Carthage, Tunis Governorate, Tunisia. It served as the citadel and elite quarter of the ancient city and remains an important archaeological and historical site.
Ruins and archaeological remains mark the summit and slopes of the hill, and the site affords views over the Gulf of Tunis. Nearby museums and displays present finds from Carthage excavations and interpret the city’s Punic, Roman and later phases.
Byrsa was the central fortified quarter of Carthage in the Punic period and later became a Roman citadel after Carthage’s destruction and refounding. The hill has seen successive occupations and excavations from the 19th century onward that uncovered buildings, tombs and artefacts.
Byrsa sits within the suburb of Carthage on the northern shore of the Gulf of Tunis, just north-east of the modern city of Tunis.
- Etymology and role: The name derives from the Punic word for a fortified place and the site forms the historic acropolis of ancient Carthage.
