Byland Abbey is a ruined medieval Cistercian monastery in North Yorkshire, England, dating to the 12th century. The surviving stone ruins include large sections of the abbey church and ancillary monastic buildings and are noted for their Gothic masonry and sculptural detail.

The site’s principal features are the lofty remains of the abbey church, the eastern end with decorative stonework and the layout of the cloister and domestic ranges. The ruins are presented as a heritage site with interpretation for visitors and are a local landmark for medieval architecture.

Founded in the mid-12th century and flourishing as a Cistercian house, the abbey declined after medieval warfare and economic pressures and was suppressed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. The buildings fell into ruin thereafter and stones were removed for local reuse.

Byland Abbey sits in rural North Yorkshire near the village of Coxwold, on land that was once agricultural; the ruin is reached by local roads and is visited as part of the region’s cluster of historic sites.

Byland Abbey is near Coxwold in North Yorkshire. From the A19 and local country lanes follow signed access routes; the site is a short drive from York (about 30-40 minutes). On-site parking and visitor information are managed by English Heritage.

• Visit on a cloudy day for better stone texture photographs-the abbey's carved details show stronger contrast without harsh sun.
• Use the onsite interpretive panels and audio guides to place the abbey within its 12th-13th century Cistercian context.
• Arrive early in summer to avoid coach-tour peaks; the site can get busy mid-afternoon.
