Byblos Castle
Castle Crusader-era castle built atop ancient Phoenician ruins
A Crusader fortress on Byblos’s old port, built atop Phoenician and Roman ruins. Visitors come for archaeological sites, narrow souks, seaside restaurants and the small on-site museum that traces millennia of habitation.
Byblos Castle is a medieval Crusader fortress on the Mediterranean coast at the town of Byblos (Jbeil). The present castle dates mainly from the 12th century and stands on much older Phoenician and Roman remains.
The castle consists of a square keep, curtain walls and an inner courtyard set beside the modern harbour; visitors typically combine a castle visit with the adjacent archaeological site and old souk. The ramparts provide close views of the sea and the town’s shoreline; the site is compact and can be seen in under two hours.
The fortress was built by Crusader forces in the 12th century on top of earlier fortifications and urban layers from Phoenician and Roman periods. It later served as a regional stronghold and was repaired and altered by successive rulers.
The castle sits at the heart of Byblos on Lebanon’s northern coastal plain, a short walk from the town’s harbour and archaeological park. Byblos lies on the coast north of Beirut and is one of Lebanon’s principal coastal towns.
- Best viewpoint: Ramparts and terraces give clear views over the small harbour, the adjacent archaeological site and the Mediterranean coastline, making late afternoon a good time for photography.
How to Get to Byblos Castle #
Byblos (Jbeil) is on the coast north of Beirut; by car it is about 35-45 km (roughly 30-60 minutes depending on traffic) via the coastal road. Regular minibuses and taxis run between Beirut and Byblos; the Crusader castle sits in the old souk and is a few minutes’ walk from the town’s main bus/taxi drop-off points.
Tips for Visiting Byblos Castle #
- Time your visit for late afternoon to enjoy cooler light on the castle walls and a sunset view over the old harbour; combining the castle with a short walk through the adjacent souk and shoreline gives a fuller visit.
- Enter from the harbour-front approach to see the castle in context with the ancient port and then continue into the adjacent archaeological areas and small museum displays - those onsite ruins and exhibits are often overlooked by visitors who stay only on the battlements.
- If you want fewer people on the ramparts, visit outside the main cruise-ship or weekend hours and include a quick stroll along the seaside promenade where locals and photographers linger at sunset.
