Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a montane forest reserve in southwestern Uganda known worldwide for mountain gorilla conservation. The park was gazetted in 1991 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

Bwindi is foremost a destination for mountain gorilla trekking, hosting roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas - commonly cited as around 400 individuals - spread among habituated groups. Beyond gorillas, the park contains dense montane forest with numerous trails, varied primate species and strong birdlife; trekking sectors are divided into distinct access areas such as Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

The area was formally protected in the early 1990s to halt logging and agricultural encroachment and to conserve its globally significant gorilla populations. Prior to formal protection the forest had long been home to indigenous Batwa families; protection measures have since shaped land-use and tourism development in the region.

Bwindi lies along the Albertine Rift in southwestern Uganda, bordering steep ridges and valleys near the borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, with towns such as Kisoro and Buhoma serving as common access points.

  • Gorilla trekking regulations: Permits for gorilla trekking are strictly limited; viewing is normally restricted to a single one-hour encounter with a habituated group and should be booked well in advance.

What to See #

  • Buhoma: Buhoma sector contains the park headquarters and main visitor facilities; it is a common starting point for northern-sector gorilla treks and shorter forest walks.
  • Ruhija: Ruhija sector lies at higher elevation to the east and offers access to gorilla groups in montane forest and a range of birding trails.
  • Rushaga: Rushaga sector in the south is known for several habituated gorilla families and has become one of the busiest trekking areas in the park.
  • Nkuringo: Nkuringo sector on the southern ridge provides access to families on steep terrain and is used for both day treks and multi-day tracking itineraries.

Tips for Visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park #

  • Book gorilla permits through Uganda Wildlife Authority well before your trip (they are limited) and choose a trekking sector - Buhoma, Ruhija or Nkuringo - based on how strenuous a hike you want and crowd levels (Ruhija and Nkuringo often see fewer visitors).
  • Arrive in the park the day before your trek to register and meet your guides; local community rangers/porters are arranged through UWA and using them helps the experience and local economy.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park #

For gorilla trekking, the drier months (June-September and December-February) are generally the best for trail conditions and visibility.

Dry season (best for gorilla trekking)
June-September; December-February · 10-20°C
Trails are generally drier and firmer, improving comfort and success rates for gorilla treks; these months are the busiest for permits.
Wet seasons (quieter but muddy)
March-May; October-November · 10-20°C
Frequent rain makes trails slippery and trekking more strenuous; forest is very lush and there are fewer visitors, which some travelers prefer.
