Büyükada

Büyükada is the largest of the Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara and administratively part of Istanbul; it has long been a popular summer retreat for city residents. The island is characterised by car-free streets, wooden Ottoman-era villas, and a village clustered around a central harbour.

Key attractions include the hilltop Aya Yorgi church and chapel complex on the island’s high point, panoramic coastal paths, and a waterfront lined with cafes and historic houses. The island developed as a resort and residential area in the 19th and early 20th centuries, retaining much of its period architecture and a quieter pace compared with the Istanbul mainland.

Ferry services from multiple Istanbul piers link the island to the city, and local transport is by bicycle, electric shuttle or on foot. The lack of regular private motor traffic is an important practical detail for planning mobility on the island.

• Vehicle policy: Private motor vehicles are generally prohibited, so travel around the island is mainly on foot, by bicycle, or via electric vehicles and local minibuses.
• Ferry connections: A ferry ride from Istanbul typically takes between 1 hour and 1.5 hours depending on the departure point, with services from both the European and Asian sides of the city.

• Aya Yorgi (Saint George) Hill and church: The hilltop pilgrimage church complex dedicated to Saint George (Aya Yorgi), located on the island's highest point and reached by a steep path of steps and a short climb.
• Historic mansions and seaside promenades: A network of seaside promenades and streets lined with late Ottoman wooden mansions, many preserved as examples of 19th- and early 20th-century island architecture.
