How to Get to Buxar#
Buxar is easiest reached by rail - it sits on a main broad-gauge line with frequent connections to Patna and Varanasi. For air arrivals use Patna (PAT) or Varanasi (VNS) and continue by train, bus, or taxi to Buxar.
Jayprakash Narayan Airport, Patna (PAT): The nearest major airport to Buxar for scheduled commercial flights is Patna (PAT). From Patna airport you can reach Buxar by taxi or prebooked car (approx. 3-4 hours); typical taxi fares are around INR 2,500-3,500 one way and journey time is about 3-4 hours depending on traffic.
Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, Varanasi (VNS): Varanasi is also commonly used for arrivals. From Varanasi airport you can take a taxi or prebooked car to Buxar (roughly 3-3.5 hours); expect fares in the INR 1,500-2,500 range for a direct taxi.
Train: Buxar is served by Buxar Railway Station (BXR) on the Delhi-Howrah/Patna corridor; regular express and passenger trains connect to Patna, Varanasi, and Ara. Travel times: Patna-Buxar about 2-4 hours depending on service; ticket prices for ordinary reserved classes typically range from INR 50-400 (sleeper/second sitting/third AC higher).
Bus: State-run and private buses run between Buxar and nearby cities (Patna, Ara, Varanasi). Journey times vary widely (3-5+ hours) and fares for non-AC state buses are commonly INR 50-250 depending on distance and vehicle class.
How to Get Around Buxar#
For most visitors the best approach is to arrive by train directly into Buxar station or fly into Patna/Varanasi and take a train/taxi. Local travel is dominated by autos and cycle rickshaws; trains and buses connect the city regionally.
- Train (INR 50-400) - Intercity trains to Buxar stop at Buxar Railway Station (BXR) with services from Patna, Varanasi and farther afield. Trains are the most reliable and economical option for longer distances; book reserved seats for comfort on express services and expect 2-4 hours from Patna depending on the service.
- Bus (INR 50-300) - State-run (RST) and private buses connect Buxar to regional hubs. Buses are frequent for short-to-medium distances; non-AC buses are cheapest while AC/private coaches are more comfortable for longer trips.
- Taxi / Private car (INR 1,500-3,500) - Taxis and private cars are the fastest door-to-door option from nearby airports and cities. Fares from Patna or Varanasi airports are typically a few thousand rupees; negotiate or use a metered/organised service where available.
- Auto-rickshaw / Cycle rickshaw (INR 10-100) - For short trips inside town use auto-rickshaws or cycle rickshaws; they are cheap and ubiquitous. Carry small change and agree a fare in advance for cycle rickshaws outside major stands.
- Walking - Buxar town is compact enough for walking between markets and many local sights. Pavements can be uneven and shade limited, so plan for the heat in summer.
