Burghley House is a large 16th-century English country house near Stamford, built for William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who was chief minister to Queen Elizabeth I. It is an important example of Elizabethan architecture and remains a major stately home open to the public.
Visitors tour state rooms and galleries containing portraits, furniture and tapestries that reflect the house’s long occupation by the Cecil family. The estate also includes formal gardens and parkland that are part of the visitor route.
Construction began in the mid-16th century for William Cecil and continued through the reign of Elizabeth I; the house has remained associated with the Cecil family since that time.
