Section of Populated Place Traditional Korean neighborhood with preserved hanok houses
Wander narrow alleys of restored hanok clustered between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. Tourists come for traditional wooden houses, tea rooms, craft shops and photo-ready city views that show Seoul’s old urban fabric.
Bukchon Hanok Village is a traditional neighbourhood of historic Korean wooden houses located in central Seoul between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces. The area preserves a dense concentration of hanok that illustrate urban domestic architecture from the Joseon period.
Winding lanes thread through clusters of hanok that have been adapted as cultural centres, tea houses, galleries and a number of guesthouses; signage and walking routes point to key viewpoints and preserved houses. Many streets offer photo views across tiled roofs toward the palace complexes and modern Seoul skyline.
The neighbourhood served as a residential quarter for high-ranking officials and aristocratic families during the Joseon Dynasty, and many surviving hanok reflect that traditional urban layout. Conservation efforts in recent decades have promoted reuse of hanok for cultural and tourist purposes while many homes remain lived-in.
Bukchon sits in Jongno-gu in central Seoul, within walking distance of Anguk and Gyeongbokgung stations and surrounded by the palace precincts that form the historic core of the city.
- Resident neighbourhood: Many houses are still private residences; stay on marked public paths and respect local residents when exploring the narrow lanes.
- Best time to visit: Best visited early morning or on weekdays to avoid the heaviest tourist crowds, with several small cafes and galleries opening from mid-morning.
What to See #
- Gahoe-dong streets: The historic residential streets around Gahoe-dong and Samcheong-dong contain most of the preserved hanok clusters and narrow alleys that define the area.
- Hanok workshops and guesthouses: Small cultural centres, tea houses, craft workshops and a number of hanok guesthouses are scattered through the village and offer demonstrations or accommodation.
- Bukchon Observatory / viewpoint: A public viewing spot often called the Bukchon Observatory provides elevated views over hanok roofs toward central Seoul and the nearby palaces.
