Bugala Island, the largest of Uganda’s Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria, draws visitors for sandy beaches, fishing villages, island resorts, and boat travel across the lake.
Bugala Island is the largest island in the Ssese Islands group in Lake Victoria and forms the core of Kalangala District in Uganda. It is a major local centre for transport, commerce and tourism in the archipelago.
The island includes a mix of beaches, small settlements, palm plantations and lodges aimed at leisure visitors. Kalangala town functions as the island’s administrative and service hub with markets, docks and basic accommodation.
The Ssese Islands, including Bugala, have long been inhabited by communities engaged in fishing and small-scale agriculture; in the 20th century they became noted for coconut and palm oil production and later for tourism development.
Bugala sits in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria off Uganda’s central lakeshore and is reached by ferry or by light aircraft from Entebbe and other Ugandan towns.
