Buena Vista Park is an urban park located on Buena Vista Hill in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury/Cole Valley area. It is a densely planted, hilltop green space with winding paths and mature trees.

The park contains wooded walking paths, stairways and informal overlooks that give visitors views across nearby neighbourhoods and toward parts of the city skyline. It is used for short walks, dog walking and neighbourhood recreation rather than large-scale events.

The park was established in the 19th century as part of San Francisco’s early urban green-space program and has retained its informal, wooded character through subsequent city planning. Trails and paths have been maintained and improved over time by the city and local groups.

The park sits within the inner city a few blocks east of Haight Street, between the Haight-Ashbury and Cole Valley neighborhoods of San Francisco.

• Best viewpoints: Hilltop viewpoints provide framed views over western San Francisco neighbourhoods and parts of the bay; early morning and late afternoon light are best for skyline photos.

By public transit: Multiple Muni routes serve the Haight-Ashbury area - stops within a short walk on Haight Street or Buena Vista Avenue East. By car: Limited street parking nearby; neighborhood streets can be busy on weekends.

• Head to Buena Vista Hill for one of San Francisco's best panoramic views of the city and the bay - morning light is particularly good for photography.
• The small steps and pathways near the hilltop are prone to shade and dampness; bring a light jacket even on warm afternoons.
• Check local community noticeboards for occasional outdoor concerts or neighborhood festivals held on the park lawns.
