BT Tower
Tower Communications tower and landmark in central London
Rises above Fitzrovia as London’s 1960s communications tower; built for telecom and once home to a revolving restaurant. Visitors catch rare public viewing days and study its concrete-and-steel profile amid Bloomsbury streets.
The BT Tower in London is a tall telecommunications tower in the Fitzrovia area that became an early symbol of modern communications in the 1960s. It was built as a communications hub for the Post Office and later used by British Telecom.
Constructed in the early 1960s and brought into use in the mid-1960s, the tower was designed to carry microwave and other communications equipment and later adapted for broadcast and telecommunications services. Its public amenities were closed after security incidents in 1981 and the structure has continued in operational use since then.
The tower stands in central London in the Fitzrovia district, north of Oxford Street and near major transport hubs in the West End. It is within walking distance of several central London stations and is plainly visible from many central locations.
- Public access: The observation gallery and public restaurant were closed after 1981 and public access to upper floors is limited, so the tower is best appreciated from street-level viewpoints.
- Heritage status: The tower is Grade II listed for its architectural and technological importance in mid-20th-century telecommunications.
