Broghil Valley National Park

Broghil Valley National Park is a remote high-altitude conservation area in northern Pakistan encompassing alpine valleys, plateaus and mountain passes. The park conserves high-mountain ecosystems and traditional pastoral landscapes.

A landscape of wide high plateaus, grassy summer pastures, scattered high-elevation lakes and steep passes leading toward the Wakhan Corridor. The area is valued for trekking, remote camping and wildlife viewing of mountain ungulates and birds.

The valley has long been used by local Wakhi and other communities for summer grazing and as a transhumant route; park designation aims to protect wildlife habitat and traditional land uses in this border region.

Broghil Valley lies in Pakistan’s far north near the international border with Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor and is accessed from valleys to the south by long mountain tracks and seasonal passes.

• Remoteness and seasonal access: The park is very remote and high in elevation; access is seasonal and commonly limited to summer months when high passes are open.
• High-mountain wildlife: Habitat supports species such as Marco Polo sheep, ibex and other high-mountain ungulates; wildlife viewing is a prime reason for specialist visits.

What to See #

• Alpine plateaus and pastures: High-altitude plateaus and summer pastures used by local herding communities and supporting a series of small alpine lakes and wetlands.
• Broghil Pass and high routes: Broghil Pass and remote trails used by trekkers to cross into adjacent high valleys and the Wakhan Corridor region of Afghanistan.
