Broad Peak is an eight-thousand-metre mountain in the Karakoram of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, with a summit elevation just above 8,000 metres. It lies close to K2 and the Gasherbrum group on the Baltoro Glacier corridor.

The main objective for climbers is the long summit ridge culminating in a broad summit plateau, which gives the peak its English name. The customary approach shares the Baltoro Glacier route and Concordia staging area used for neighbouring Karakoram expeditions.

Broad Peak offers technically demanding high-altitude snow and ice routes but is generally regarded as less technically extreme than K2, making it a frequent objective for high-altitude mountaineers operating in the region.

The mountain was first climbed in 1957 by an organised Austrian expedition, which established the first route to the main summit. Since then it has been part of the catalogue of 8,000-metre ascents pursued by international teams.

Broad Peak sits on the Karakoram watershed in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, very near K2 and Gasherbrum, with access over the Baltoro Glacier from the village of Askole and the common Concordia high-camp area.

  • Elevation: The summit of the mountain reaches just over 8,000 metres, making it one of the world's higher eight-thousanders located in the Karakoram range.

What to See #

  • Southwest/South Ridge (standard route): The main climbing line follows the southwest/south ridge from base camp on the Baltoro Glacier and is the standard route used by most expeditions.
  • Base Camp / Baltoro Glacier: Base camp and approach are shared with other Karakoram giants on the Baltoro Glacier; the glacier approach and Concordia are the usual staging areas.

How to Get to Broad Peak #

Broad Peak is accessed from the Karakoram staging towns rather than by regular public transit. Most climbers fly or drive to Skardu (flights from Islamabad are seasonal) and then arrange a jeep transfer to Askole, the last village reachable by vehicle. From Askole the route becomes a multi‑day trek along the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and the Broad Peak base camp - expect several days on foot with full expedition logistics.

Tips for Visiting Broad Peak #

  • Plan an expedition for the summer climbing season (typically June-August) and use Skardu as the logistical gateway-most teams fly or drive to Skardu and trek out from Askole toward the Baltoro Glacier.
  • Arrange a licensed expedition operator, official climbing permits and a liaison officer through Pakistani authorities before traveling; Broad Peak is a technical 8000m peak and single-party self-plans are uncommon and risky.
  • Build a multi-week itinerary that includes slow acclimatization on the Baltoro-Concordia route; proper acclimatization and staged camps are the standard approach rather than trying to push high elevations quickly.

Best Time to Visit Broad Peak #

The best time for Broad Peak is the summer climbing season (June-August), when weather windows for expeditions are most likely.

Main climbing season (recommended for expeditions)
June-August · Base camp roughly -5-5°C (summit much colder)
Most stable weather windows for high-altitude mountaineering; logistics and rescue support are available during this period.
Shoulder season (possible but riskier)
May, September · Around -10-0°C at base camp
Shorter weather windows and more variable conditions; sometimes used by experienced teams.
Winter (not recommended)
October-April · Well below freezing at all altitudes
Extremely harsh, unstable and dangerous conditions for climbing.
