How to Get to Brifu#
Brifu (Upper River Division) is reached primarily by road from Banjul or regional towns such as Basse Santa Su. There are no passenger trains; expect long bus or shared-taxi journeys across the country.
Banjul International Airport (BJL): BJL (Yundum) is the main international airport for The Gambia. From Banjul you will travel overland to Upper River Division (Basse/Sandeling/Brifu area) by bus, shared taxi or private transfer; expect long overland travel times (several hours).
Regional air services: There are limited or no regular domestic scheduled flights into Upper River Division; overland transport is the usual option once in The Gambia.
Bus / Intercity coach: Long-distance buses and intercity coaches connect Banjul and major towns; public transport to the Upper River Division typically involves a bus to Basse Santa Su followed by local taxis or shared vehicles to smaller villages like Brifu. Journey times from Banjul to Basse are often 6-8+ hours.
Train: There is no passenger rail network in The Gambia; road transport is the primary means to reach inland villages.
How to Get Around Brifu#
There are no rail links; road travel (intercity buses, shared taxis, private hires) is the only practical way to reach Brifu. Prepare for long travel times from Banjul and basic transport conditions once you arrive in the region.
- Intercity bus / coach (GMD 200-600) - Intercity buses and coaches connect Banjul with regional centres. They are the most affordable way to travel long distances but can be slow and crowded. For Upper River Division you will likely change buses at a larger hub like Basse Santa Su.
- Shared taxi / bush taxi (GMD 100-400) - Shared taxis (bush taxis) are common for medium-distance travel and to reach rural villages. They depart when full and are faster than buses but less comfortable. Be prepared for variable road conditions and to negotiate or confirm fares in advance.
- Private hire / transfer (GMD 1,500+) - Hiring a private car or arranging a transfer from Banjul is the most comfortable and flexible option for reaching remote villages. It is the quickest door-to-door method but significantly more expensive than public options.
- Local minibus / village transport (GMD 10-100) - Within the Upper River Division, local minibuses and motorbike taxis (okadas) serve short routes between villages and nearby towns. Expect basic vehicles, infrequent service, and to buy tickets or pay the driver directly.

Brifu is a small Gambian village; on‑site budget lodging is essentially nonexistent. Visitors usually base in Basse or travel onward to Banjul.
