Brdy
Mountains Forested highland range west of Prague
The Brdy range west of Prague comprises forested hills and former military zones now open for recreation; visitors hike, cycle and camp on marked routes across the plateaus.
Brdy is a forested highland and hill range in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, characterised by wooded ridges, plateaus and upland summits.
Outdoor recreation is the main draw - there is an extensive network of footpaths and forestry tracks, viewpoints from the ridges, and upland summits such as Tok at 865 metres. The landscape is used by walkers, cyclists and outdoor sports enthusiasts rather than large-scale built attractions.
During the 20th century much of Brdy was restricted for military training; the area was gradually decommissioned and opened for civilian recreational use in the 2010s, and parts are now managed for conservation and public access.
The Brdy uplands lie to the southwest of Prague, forming a wooded belt of hills within Central Bohemia and linking into surrounding lowland and upland landscapes.
- Highest point: The highest summit of the range is Tok at 865 m, a common target for walkers and ridge routes.
- Former military area: Much of the area was used as a military training ground through the 20th century and was decommissioned and opened to wider public access in the 2010s, creating extensive routes for hiking and cycling.
What to See #
- Tok (highest point): The Tok peak reaches 865 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the Brdy range, offering the clearest long-distance views.
