Brauron

Brauron (ancient Vravrona) is an archaeological sanctuary of Artemis on the eastern coastal plain of Attica, Greece, with remains spanning the Archaic and Classical periods. The site is notable for its temple foundations, votive deposits and ritual installations associated with the cult of Artemis Brauronia.

Remains at the site include the foundations of the temple, altars, stoas and ancillary structures; excavations have uncovered numerous votive objects and pottery dating from the 7th to the 4th centuries BC. The sanctuary is also associated in ancient sources with the initiation rites known as the Arkteia for young girls.

Excavation and conservation work in the 20th century established the site’s basic layout and permitted on-site display of finds; a small archaeological museum houses many of the recovered artifacts. The complex illustrates religious practice on the eastern Attic coast in the Archaic and Classical eras.

Brauron stands near the modern village of Vravrona on the Aegean coast of Attica, roughly 30 km east of central Athens and close to the port town of Rafina.
