Brahehus is the ruin of a 17th-century castle built by Count Per Brahe the Younger on a cliff above Lake Vättern in Jönköping County, southern Sweden. The structure today survives as partial masonry ruins and a prominent landmark on the lakeshore.
The site’s main draw is the castle ruin itself and the vantage points on the promontory that afford wide views across Lake Vättern and the opposite shore. Access is commonly by a short walk from nearby parking areas and marked paths.
The castle was constructed in the mid-17th century as a noble residence and strongpoint and fell into ruin in the early 18th century; surviving masonry marks the outline of the original building. The ruin has been stabilized and is interpreted as a historical ruin rather than a restored structure.
Brahehus sits on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern above the town of Gränna in Jönköping County, within southern Sweden’s lake district. It is reached by local roads from nearby towns and is within driving distance of regional centers in the county.

How to Get to Brahehus #
By car: follow road 200/34 toward Gränna, then local signs to Brahehus; parking is available near the trailhead with a brief walk to the ruin. From Jönköping, it’s roughly a 25-30 minute drive.

- Park at the small lot on the forest road and take the short walk to the ruin; the viewpoint over Lake Vättern is excellent at sunrise.
- Bring binoculars: the ruin is popular with birdwatchers and the lake's shipping lanes reveal a slow maritime choreography.
