Bothwell Castle

Bothwell Castle is a 13th-century medieval fortress on a high bank above the River Clyde near the village of Bothwell in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is one of the largest surviving medieval castles in Scotland and is now a ruin noted for its curtain walls and central stone structures.

The castle’s main features include a substantial inner ward, surviving sections of the great hall and prominent curtain walls with towers that once formed its defensive perimeter. The ruin offers extensive views over the Clyde and surrounding lowlands and is frequently visited for its architecture and riverside setting.

The castle dates to the 13th century and was originally constructed as a royal stronghold; it saw use and multiple episodes of conflict through the medieval period. Today the site is in public care and interpreted for visitors as an important example of medieval military architecture.

Bothwell Castle stands beside a bend of the River Clyde close to the village of Bothwell and is situated southeast of Glasgow within the lowland landscape of South Lanarkshire.
