Bosphorus Bridge
Building Suspension bridge linking Istanbul's European and Asian sides
Suspension bridge spanning the Bosporus, linking Istanbul’s European and Asian shores. Tourists photograph the crossing, take Bosporus cruises beneath it and explore waterfront neighbourhoods like Ortaköy.
The Bosphorus Bridge is a major suspension bridge in Istanbul that connects the European and Asian sides of the city across the Bosphorus Strait. It was the first fixed road crossing of the strait when it opened in 1973 and is a key part of Istanbul’s motorway network.
The bridge carries multi-lane highway traffic and is noted for its long central span of 1,074 m between the two main towers. It functions as a vital urban transport link and is visible from many points along the Bosphorus shoreline.
Construction and opening in 1973 provided the first direct road connection between Istanbul’s continents, transforming traffic and development patterns. The structure has since been one of several crossings and has been officially renamed the 15 July Martyrs Bridge.
The bridge sits across the narrow waterway between the neighborhoods of Ortaköy on the European shore and Beylerbeyi on the Asian shore, and it is easily visible from both waterfronts and from boat routes on the Bosphorus.
- Opening year and name: Opened in 1973 as the first road bridge linking Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus and later renamed the 15 July Martyrs Bridge.
- Main span length: The central suspension span measures 1,074 m, making it one of the long-span suspension bridges constructed in the 20th century.
What to See #
- Main span: The main suspension span that carries the motorway between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul and measures 1,074 m between towers.
- Deck and approaches: The road deck and anchorage structures that form part of the city's O-1 motorway crossing the Bosphorus Strait.
- Nearby viewpoints: Viewpoints on the nearby shores such as Ortaköy on the European side and Beylerbeyi on the Asian side that are commonly used for photos of the bridge.
How to Get to Bosphorus Bridge #
The Bosphorus (15 July Martyrs) Bridge is crossed by the O-1 motorway (the inner Istanbul beltway). By car, follow the O-1 from central Istanbul (Beşiktaş/Ortaköy on the European side or Üsküdar/Beylerbeyi on the Asian side); Taksim to the bridge area is roughly 6-10 km depending on route. Pedestrian crossing is not permitted; to view the bridge on foot go to nearby Ortaköy (short taxi or local bus from Taksim) or to viewpoints in Beylerbeyi.
Public transit does not run across the bridge itself; instead use metro or Marmaray to reach transfer points and then a short taxi or bus ride to bridge viewpoints. For example, take the M2 metro to Taksim/Gayrettepe and connect by taxi to Ortaköy, or use Marmaray to Üsküdar and taxi to Beylerbeyi.
Tips for Visiting Bosphorus Bridge #
- Visit around sunrise or shortly after (or at dusk) and view the bridge from the shore in Ortaköy, Beşiktaş or Üsküdar - those vantage points and the regular Bosphorus ferries give the best unobstructed photo angles.
- Do not plan to walk the bridge: the 15 July Martyrs Bridge (formerly Bosphorus Bridge) has no public pedestrian access; take a Şehir Hatları or private Bosphorus cruise to get close views instead.
- Avoid weekday rush hours (roughly 07:00-09:00 and 17:00-19:00) when traffic and noise are worst; mid-morning or late evening ferry runs are calmer and give clearer photographic conditions.
Best Time to Visit Bosphorus Bridge #
Best visited in spring or autumn for mild weather, fewer crowds, and good conditions for walks or boat trips along the strait.
