Bosawás Biosphere Reserve
Wildlife Reserve Large tropical biosphere reserve protecting rainforest biodiversity
Vast rainforest reserve in northern Nicaragua protecting tropical forest and indigenous territories; attracts researchers and adventurous travellers for biodiversity study, river travel and community visits.
Bosawás Biosphere Reserve is a large protected rainforest area in northern Nicaragua, established as a biosphere reserve in the late 1990s and covering roughly 2.0 million hectares. It is one of Central America’s largest areas of contiguous tropical forest.
The reserve contains extensive lowland and montane rainforest, river systems and wetlands that support high biodiversity, including large mammals and wide bird diversity. Key natural features are extensive primary forest tracts and major rivers that form corridors through the landscape.
The protected area was created through national and international conservation initiatives in the 1990s and has long-standing use and stewardship by local indigenous groups. Management combines government protected-area status with community territories and customary use.
Geographically it sits in northern Nicaragua, spanning parts of the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region and adjacent departments, and borders Honduras to the north. The terrain ranges from lowland rainforest to upland hills and river valleys several hundred kilometres north of the capital.
- Access: Access is limited and often requires river travel or rough forest tracks; guided trips are recommended due to remote terrain and presence of indigenous communities.
- Indigenous presence: Home to indigenous Miskito and Mayangna communities who live inside and manage parts of the reserve.
