Bosaso Travel Guide
City City in Bari, Somalia with trade activities
Bosaso pulses as Puntland’s main port: dhow traffic, fish auctions, camel trade and coastal roads heading toward rugged beaches and the plateaus where pastoral life carries on.
Why Visit Bosaso? #
A busy Red Sea gateway, the port of Bosaso pulses with maritime trade and seafaring traditions that shape life here. Dhow fleets and the fish market show everyday commerce, while hilltop views and nearby beaches offer stark coastal scenery. The livestock export trade and regional souks underline its role in Horn of Africa commerce. Travelers interested in commerce, fishing culture and fast-paced markets will find a raw, working-port experience.
Who's Bosaso For?
Bosaso is a major commercial hub for northeastern Somalia and a key Gulf of Aden port. Shipping, livestock trade and logistics underpin business travel, and practical hotels and offices are concentrated near the harbour.
The beaches around Bosaso and nearby coastal cliffs are attractive for seaside walks and coastal vistas. Visitors can also explore local fishing communities and short boat trips, though tourist infrastructure is limited.
Bosaso suits travellers looking for raw coastal adventure-boat fishing, small-boat trips and rugged shore exploration. Activities are informal and often organized locally, so bring patience and arrange guides through trusted contacts.
Fresh fish and Somali coastal cooking are front and centre in Bosaso’s eateries. Expect simple grilled seafood, rice dishes and local sweets served in casual spots; prices are generally low and portions generous.

How to Get to Bosaso
Bosaso is served primarily through Bosaso International Airport (BSA); international connections are limited so many travelers route via Mogadishu or Djibouti and then take a domestic flight or overland transfer. Road connections are informal and depend on shared minibuses or private hire rather than scheduled national services.
Bosaso Airport (BSA): Bosaso International Airport is the city’s main airport, located just outside Bosaso. The only reliable way into the city from the airport is by taxi or a prearranged private transfer; journey time to the centre is roughly 15-25 minutes depending on traffic and exact drop-off. Expect to pay in cash; typical negotiated taxi fares are roughly USD 5-15 and private transfers USD 20-40, though prices vary and should be agreed beforehand.
Mogadishu Aden Adde (MGQ) / Djibouti-Ambouli (JIB): International visitors commonly connect to Bosaso via Mogadishu or Djibouti and then take a domestic flight or overland transport. Domestic flights from Mogadishu to Bosaso generally take around 1.5-2 hours; flights from Djibouti (when available) are shorter. Overland travel from Mogadishu is long (20+ hours by road) and not recommended for most visitors; schedules and fares for overland routes vary widely and are informal.
Train: There are no passenger rail services in Somalia.
Bus: Intercity travel is handled by shared minibuses and bush taxis that depart from informal terminals and market areas rather than a formal central station. Common routes include Bosaso-Garowe (roughly 4-6 hours) and Bosaso-Galkayo (roughly 6-10 hours); fares are informal and typically fall in ranges like USD 10-25 (Bosaso-Garowe) and USD 15-40 (Bosaso-Galkayo), but prices and departure times are negotiable and can change with demand.
How to Get Around Bosaso
Bosaso is best navigated with a mix of taxis for short trips and shared minibuses or hired 4x4s for longer journeys. For comfort and safety on rough roads, hire a driver and vehicle; for short intra-city hops, negotiate taxi or motorcycle-taxi fares before boarding.
- Taxis (USD 1-15) - Metered taxis are uncommon; most taxi travel is negotiated by fare. Taxis are the most practical way to get around the town after dark or for door-to-door trips - confirm the price before you get in and carry cash. Drivers can also be hired for half-day or full-day trips to nearby beaches and towns; agree a price in advance.
- Shared minibuses / Bush taxis (USD 5-40) - These are the backbone of intercity travel in Puntland. Vehicles leave when full and depart from market areas or roadside staging points, not formal terminals. They're the cheapest way to travel between towns but can be crowded and schedules are informal - bring water, expect stops, and allow extra time for delays.
- Car hire / 4x4 with driver (USD 60-150 per day) - Hiring a 4x4 with a driver is the safest and most comfortable option for travel outside the city or to remote areas. Expect higher rates than in better-served countries; day rates typically cover fuel and driver but negotiate insurance and fuel terms up front. A staffed vehicle is recommended for travel on rough or remote roads.
- Domestic flights (USD 100-300 (varies widely)) - For longer distances across Somalia and Puntland, small regional carriers operate domestic flights linking Bosaso with hubs like Mogadishu and occasionally other regional airports. Flights save many hours compared with road travel but schedules can be irregular - book through local agents and allow flexibility for changes.
- Motorcycle taxis (bajaj / motorcycle) (USD 0.5-3) - Motorcycle taxis offer very cheap, quick point-to-point travel for short distances inside town and in market areas. They can be faster than cars in traffic but carry more risk and are not suitable with heavy luggage; always agree a fare before setting off.
- Walking - Many of Bosaso's markets and the waterfront are compact enough to explore on foot; walking is the best way to see neighbourhoods up close. Take normal urban safety precautions after dark and keep valuables secure.
