Main image

Bodrum Castle is a medieval fortress on the waterfront of Bodrum in southwestern Turkey, originally built by the Knights Hospitaller during the 15th century. The castle formed a defensive complex controlling the harbour and seaways of the southwestern Aegean.

The structure comprises curtain walls, multiple towers and ramparts, with later alterations and repairs; several towers bear names reflecting Western European contributors. The fortress now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology with collections from regional shipwrecks.

Construction began in the early 1400s under the Knights Hospitaller and continued over decades as the castle was expanded and reinforced; it played a strategic role in medieval maritime defence and later Ottoman control.

The castle stands at the tip of the Bodrum peninsula overlooking Bodrum harbour and the Aegean Sea, immediately adjacent to the modern town and marina.

  • Knights' construction: Construction began under the Knights Hospitaller in the early 1400s; several towers are named after Western languages and regions, such as the English, French and Italian towers.
  • Harbour position: The castle overlooks Bodrum harbour and marina, offering close access from the town and maritime approaches used historically and today.

How to Get to Bodrum Castle #

Bodrum Castle (St. Peter’s Castle) is on Bodrum’s waterfront, a short 5-10 minute walk from Bodrum harbour and the town centre. From Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) the drive to Bodrum town is about 30-40 km and typically takes 30-45 minutes by car; airport shuttles (Havaş) and taxis connect the airport with Bodrum town.

Local minibuses (dolmuş) from surrounding towns stop in Bodrum centre; once in town the castle is an easy walk from the ferry terminal and main beachfront.

Tips for Visiting Bodrum Castle #

  • Visit soon after opening or late afternoon to avoid the busiest hours around the Bodrum harbour and cruise-ship arrivals; mornings give cooler conditions for exploring the ramparts and courtyards.
  • Enter via the main gate facing the harbor to reach the Museum of Underwater Archaeology first-the castle's shipwreck exhibits are extensive and often receive less time from visitors focused on the battlements.
  • Climb the castle towers for views over Bodrum and the sea rather than only touring the interior rooms; the defensive works and museum displays together tell the full maritime story.
  • Check the schedule for any temporary exhibitions or cultural events-Bodrum Castle frequently hosts shows that are worth timing your visit for and that many standard visits miss.
