Main image

Black Mesa is a broad volcanic mesa and plateau region that extends across parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Oklahoma in the southwestern United States. The landscape is characterised by relatively flat-topped highlands capped by erosion-resistant rock.

The area features semi-arid grassland and scrub, rugged mesa edges and scenic plateaus valued for solitude, hiking and natural observation. In Oklahoma the mesa includes the state’s highest point, but the Black Mesa region as a whole is a geographically continuous upland across state lines.

Black Mesa landscapes formed through volcanic activity and subsequent erosion that left basalt or other resistant caprock covering older sediments. The mesas have long been part of Indigenous territories and later ranching and grazing use across the three states.

The Black Mesa region sits on the high plains of the American Southwest, straddling northeastern New Mexico, southeastern Colorado and the Oklahoma panhandle; the landscape is remote and sparsely populated.

  • Tri-state region: The term refers to a continuous highland and mesa complex that spans parts of northeastern New Mexico, southeastern Colorado and the Oklahoma panhandle.
