Bishapur
Archaeological Site Sassanian-era city ruins with carved rock reliefs
A Sassanian urban ruin in Fars province, Bishapur preserves street layouts, mosaic pavements and nearby rock reliefs of Shapur I. Archaeological visitors examine brickwork plans and sculpted imperial scenes.
Bishapur is an archaeological site in Fars province, Iran, established as a Sasanian city in the 3rd century by King Shapur I. It is an important surviving example of Sasanian urban planning and rock-relief art.
Excavated foundations and paved street traces reveal a planned urban grid with stone and brick construction and the remains of ceremonial and residential buildings. Close by are several large rock-cut reliefs carved into limestone cliffs that illustrate royal scenes and are a primary draw for visitors.
Founded in the 3rd century by the Sasanian king Shapur I, the city served as a royal and administrative centre in the Sasanian Empire. It declined after the end of Sasanian rule and now survives as an archaeological complex excavated in the 20th century.
The ruins sit in Fars province in southwestern Iran, near the modern city of Kazerun at the foot of the Zagros foothills.
- Founding era: Most of the visible remains date to the Sasanian period, founded in the 3rd century by the Sasanian king Shapur I.
- Visitor tip: Site terrain is arid and exposed; bring water and sun protection, and plan visits outside the hottest months for comfort.
What to See #
- City remains: Located on a planned grid at the foot of the Zagros foothills, this area preserves foundations of houses, public buildings and streets laid out with stone and fired-brick masonry; visible remains include city walls and building platforms.
- Rock reliefs: A series of rock-cut reliefs set into nearby limestone cliffs depicting Sasanian royal scenes and processions, carved close to the main archaeological area and accessible on short walks from the ruins.
- Palace complex: The palace and administrative quarter where the better-preserved masonry and foundations are concentrated, showing the layout of ceremonial and residential complexes from the Sasanian period.
Tips for Visiting Bishapur #
- Visit early in the morning (cooler temperatures and softer light) to see the rock reliefs and ruins with fewer people and better photos; heat and dust make midday visits less pleasant.
- Allow time to walk past the main palace ruins toward the river valley-many visitors stop at the central courtyard and miss the nearby carved Shapur I reliefs and remaining mosaic/paved surfaces.
- Hire a local guide at the site or in nearby Kazerun who can point out little-signposted features (reliefs, inscriptions and city plan) and explain the layout-interpretation on-site is limited.
Best Time to Visit Bishapur #
Best visited in spring or autumn when temperatures are milder and the open-air ruins are most comfortable to explore.
