Museum Panama City museum on biodiversity, designed by Gehry
Museum on the Amador Causeway in Panama City, designed by Frank Gehry, presenting exhibits on Panama’s biodiversity and the formation of the isthmus; visitors combine the museum with canal- and city sightseeing.
The Biomuseo is a museum in Panama City dedicated to the biodiversity of Panama and its role as a biological crossroads. The building is known for its striking, multicoloured design by architect Frank Gehry.
Exhibitions explain Panama’s geological history, ecological diversity and the country’s impact on the movement of species between North and South America. Galleries use large-scale displays and interactive elements to illustrate biogeography and conservation themes.
The museum opened in 2014 and serves both local and international visitors interested in natural history, conservation and Panama’s environmental significance.
The Biomuseo is located on the Amador Causeway at the entrance to Panamá Bay, close to the Panama Canal’s Pacific gateways and easily reached from central Panama City.
- Architectural note: Designed by architect Frank Gehry and notable for its brightly coloured, sculptural roofline that makes it visible from the Amador Causeway and nearby waterways.
- Opening and focus: Opened to the public in 2014 and focused on Panama's role in regional biodiversity and conservation, using interactive and interpretive galleries.
How to Get to Biomuseo #
Biomuseo sits on the Amador Causeway (Calzada de Amador) in Panama City. By car it is a short drive from central Panama City (roughly 6-8 km, about 10-20 minutes depending on traffic); from Tocumen International Airport expect roughly 25-30 km and about 30-45 minutes by car via the main east-west routes (Corredor Norte/Av. Domingo Díaz into the city). There is a parking area at the Causeway.
There is no direct Panama Metro stop at the Causeway; the usual public option is to take Line 1 of the Panama Metro or buses to the Albrook/El Metro/Albrook bus terminal area and continue by short taxi or local bus to the Amador Causeway. The museum is a short walk (about 5-10 minutes) from the Causeway entrance/parking area.
Tips for Visiting Biomuseo #
- Visit at opening on weekday mornings (or the last hour before closing) to avoid the busiest times - the Amador Causeway near Biomuseo gets crowded when cruise ships are in port and at midday.
- Approach from the Amador Causeway pedestrian/vehicular entrance and consider a taxi or ride-hail to avoid limited parking; the museum sits right on the causeway so it's an easy walk from that access point.
- Don't skip the outdoor areas and terraces: many visitors focus only on the galleries and miss the colorful exterior architecture and viewpoints that frame the Panama City skyline and the Canal.
- Combine your visit with a short stop at nearby Punta Culebra or a walk on the causeway to make a half-day of the area and avoid returning during peak sun and crowds.
Best Time to Visit Biomuseo #
Visit the Biomuseo during Panama's dry season (Dec-Apr) for fewer rain interruptions and busier, livelier museum days; it remains open year‑round.
