Big Ben
Monument Nickname for London's Great Bell and clock tower
The Elizabeth Tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster houses the Great Bell known as Big Ben; visitors photograph the clock faces and learn about Victorian engineering and timekeeping.
Commonly called Big Ben, this name properly applies to the Great Bell housed within the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. The tower itself, known as Elizabeth Tower, contains a four-faced clock that began operation in 1859 and is one of London’s most recognisable landmarks.
The clock faces and bell are the principal attractions; the tower’s Gothic Revival architecture is visible from many points along the Thames and nearby bridges. The bell sounds on the hour and the quarter bells mark the quarter hours, forming an audible landmark across the local area.
Constructed in the mid-19th century as part of the rebuilt Palace of Westminster, the tower and clock mechanism have undergone maintenance and conservation while continuing to function as part of the parliamentary estate. Public interior tours are restricted and generally arranged through Members of Parliament for UK residents.
Situated at the edge of the River Thames in Westminster, the tower stands adjacent to the Houses of Parliament and across from Westminster Bridge, within easy reach of central London transport links.
- Name note: Technically the name refers to the Great Bell; the clock tower itself is officially called Elizabeth Tower, renamed in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee.
- Practical info: The tower rises to about 96 metres and the bell traditionally chimes on the hour; viewing and photography are best from Westminster Bridge and the Parliament forecourt.
How to Get to Big Ben #
Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower) stands beside the Palace of Westminster next to Westminster Underground station (Circle, District and Jubilee lines) - it’s a 1-2 minute walk from the station exit across Parliament Square. The tower is in central London on the north bank of the Thames and is easily reached on foot from nearby central locations.
Tips for Visiting Big Ben #
- For unobstructed photos of the clock tower, position yourself on Westminster Bridge or Parliament Square at first light or after dusk when traffic and tour groups are lighter and the tower is attractively illuminated.
- Bear in mind that interior tours of Elizabeth Tower are restricted to UK residents and must be arranged through a Member of Parliament; non-UK visitors cannot climb the tower, so plan for external views and nearby Parliament exhibitions instead.
Best Time to Visit Big Ben #
Go in spring or autumn for milder weather and fewer crowds when viewing the tower and the riverside area.
