Big Almaty Lake is an alpine lake in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains south of Almaty, Kazakhstan, located at roughly 2,500 meters above sea level. The lake is one of the most-visited natural landmarks near Almaty and serves as part of the local water supply.
The lake’s striking mountain setting and turquoise water make it a popular short-hike and photography destination; trails and viewing points around the lake provide close views of the basin. Access is frequently controlled because the lake and surrounding catchment are used for municipal water abstraction.
The lake is a natural high-altitude basin in the Zailiysky Alatau range and lies to the south of Almaty city, commonly reached by a 30- to 60-minute drive from the city depending on road conditions. Its immediate surroundings are alpine slopes and scree.

Big Almaty Lake lies in the Trans‑Ili Alatau mountains south of Almaty. The usual approach is by road from Almaty via the Medeu/Shymbulak direction; the drive from Almaty city center is roughly 15-20 km along the mountain access road. Vehicles are sometimes restricted near the final approach and visitors should expect a short walk (around 1-2 km) from the nearest parking/checkpoint to the lake.

- Go early in the morning for the calmest water and the best reflections; afternoons often bring wind that roughens the surface and more day‑trippers.
- Park at the designated lot near the dam/hydropower area and be prepared for a 20-40 minute walk to the primary lakeshore viewpoints - the closest viewpoints are reached on foot.
