Biên Hòa Travel Guide
City City in Vietnam, known for industrial growth
Biên Hòa sits upriver from Ho Chi Minh City, a working industrial hub where visitors find bustling markets, riverside cafés, war-era sites and access to Đồng Nai’s lakes and Cat Tien National Park.
Why Visit Biên Hòa? #
A short drive from Ho Chi Minh City, Biên Hòa offers an authentic view of southern Vietnam - a mix of riverside life along the Đồng Nai River, leafy escapes like Bửu Long Park, and busy markets that bustle during Tết. Food draws many visitors: local bowls of hủ tiếu and savory bánh xèo are served at family-run stalls. Expect everyday local rhythms rather than tourist frills, and an easy base for exploring Đồng Nai’s countryside and nearby craft villages.
Who's Biên Hòa For?
Good for couples who like low-key local dates: riverside cafés along the Đồng Nai River, quiet parks and small family-run restaurants near the city centre. For full-on romance you’ll head into Ho Chi Minh City or Vũng Tàu, a short drive away.
Families will find affordable guesthouses, safe sidewalks in the centre and parks where kids can run. Small museums and markets around Biên Hòa Market offer hands-on food and culture. For bigger attractions, day trips to Vũng Tàu or Cat Tiên are straightforward.
Not a classic backpacker hub - hostels are scarce but budget hotels and guesthouses are cheap. Use morning buses or the commuter trains into Ho Chi Minh City to connect with the backpacker trail; expect a 30-60 minute journey depending on traffic.
Fast mobile data is common, but coworking spaces are nearly non-existent in Biên Hòa. Cheap apartments and low living costs are appealing, yet most nomads base themselves in Ho Chi Minh City and commute when needed for quieter, cheaper office days.
Biên Hòa is a good place to eat like a local: grilled seafood stalls, cơm tấm and bánh mì vendors near the markets, and late-night snacks at Tam Hiệp. Street food is inexpensive and authentic - bring a sense of adventure and appetite.
Use Biên Hòa as a base for outdoor days: Cat Tiên National Park is reachable for trekking and wildlife tours, riverside routes for motorbike day-rides, and coastal Vũng Tàu is a couple hours away for kitesurfing and diving operators.
Nightlife is mostly local: karaoke boxes, beer halls and small live-music bars rather than large clubs. If you want big dance floors or international DJs, hop on a bus to Ho Chi Minh City; Biên Hòa is better for cheap drinks and local crowds.
The Đồng Nai River, city parks and nearby wetlands offer decent birdwatching and river scenery. For proper wilderness go to Cat Tiên National Park or Long Thành wetlands; both are a few hours’ drive and reward you with more varied flora and wildlife.

How to Get to Biên Hòa
Biên Hòa is served principally via Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) and by rail on the North-South line at Ga Biên Hòa. Most visitors arrive through Ho Chi Minh City and continue by car, train or intercity bus to reach Biên Hòa.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN): The closest major airport is Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, about 30-40 km from central Biên Hòa. By car or Grab the trip typically takes 40-90 minutes depending on traffic; fares are roughly 250,000-500,000 VND for a private car (approx.). Taxis from the airport use meters and will be a similar cost range; motorbike Grab (GrabBike) is cheaper for solo travellers (often 120,000-250,000 VND). You can also take an airport shuttle or public bus into Ho Chi Minh City (to Mien Dong/Eastern Bus Station) and then catch a bus or shuttle to Biên Hòa - total journey time typically 60-120 minutes and usually the cheapest option (see Bus section below).
Long Thành International Airport (under construction): Long Thành is a major new airport being built east of Ho Chi Minh City; as of now it is not yet fully open for regular commercial flights. When it opens, planned transfers to Biên Hòa are expected to be by taxi/ride-hail and dedicated shuttle services; current public passenger services are limited or not yet operational, so most travellers still arrive via Tan Son Nhat.
Train: Biên Hòa has a station on Vietnam’s North-South Railway (Ga Biên Hòa). Regular commuter and long-distance trains run between Sài Gòn (Saigon / Ga Sài Gòn) and Biên Hòa; the rail journey from Saigon station is short - roughly 25-45 minutes depending on the service and timetable. Fares vary by train class: slow commuter services are very cheap (low tens of thousands of VND or less), while reserved seats/air-conditioned berths on long-distance trains cost more.
Bus: Intercity buses run between Ho Chi Minh City’s Mien Dong (Eastern Bus Station) and Biên Hòa frequently; journey times are typically 40-90 minutes depending on traffic, and single fares are generally inexpensive (often in the range of ~20,000-70,000 VND depending on service type). Local Dong Nai provincial buses and shuttle coaches also connect Biên Hòa with surrounding towns and industrial zones - these are the lowest-cost option but can be slower and less frequent outside peak hours.
How to Get Around Biên Hòa
Biên Hòa is best navigated by motorbike or ride-hailing for flexibility and speed; taxis are a comfortable alternative if you have luggage. Public buses and the regional train are very cheap but can be slower and less convenient for tourists - walking is practical only for short central-area trips.
- Grab / Ride-hailing (Motorbike 15,000-120,000 VND; Car 60,000-400,000 VND) - Grab (car and motorbike) is the most convenient way to get around and to/from HCMC; cars are comfortable and reliable for luggage, motorbikes are the fastest in traffic for solo travellers. Expect fares to vary by demand - short intra-city trips are cheap, and longer rides to/from Tan Son Nhat or between districts cost more. Use the app for upfront pricing and to avoid negotiation.
- Xe ôm / Motorbike taxi (10,000-80,000 VND) - Traditional xe ôm are everywhere and useful for short hops across town or to reach markets and stations quickly. Negotiate a price before you ride or use GrabBike for a metered fare. Helmets are commonly supplied but check condition; these are best for solo travellers without much luggage.
- Metered taxis (60,000-400,000 VND) - Metered taxis (Vinasun, Mai Linh and others) are widely available and a good option for groups or when you have luggage. They use meters so fares are predictable - still check the meter starts at pick-up. In busy periods Grab may be cheaper, but taxis are convenient for airport runs and late-night travel.
- Public buses (Under 20,000 VND (typical)) - Local and provincial buses are the cheapest way to get around and link Biên Hòa with Ho Chi Minh City - useful for budget travellers and regular commuters. Routes and timetables can be slow and infrequent off-peak; stops may not always be well signed in English, so ask locals or check online for route numbers. Expect crowded conditions during rush hours.
- Train (Ga Biên Hòa) (Varies by service (very cheap on commuter trains; higher for reserved/AC seats)) - Ga Biên Hòa on the North-South Railway is useful for quick hops to Sài Gòn (Ga Sài Gòn) and for longer-distance travel north or south. Trains can be faster than road travel when traffic is heavy; book reserved seats for comfort on long services. Timetables vary, so check the official schedule or station noticeboard before planning.
- Walking - The city centre around the river and market areas is walkable for short trips, shopping and eating; however, Biên Hòa is spread out and many sights require a motorbike or car to reach. Use walking for local exploration but avoid long distances in the midday heat.

Where to Eat in Biên Hòa #
Biên Hòa eats like a hardworking provincial city-comfort-forward, inexpensive, and focused on markets and family-run stalls. You won’t find many high-end tasting menus, but you will find excellent bánh canh (thick tapioca noodles often with crab or pork), bún riêu, cơm tấm plates, and plenty of seafood dishes that reflect its location in Đồng Nai province. Meals are frequently eaten quickly at plastic chairs by the roadside or taken home to extended families.
The best way to eat in Biên Hòa is to follow the locals to morning markets and the evening street-food strips: bright bowls of soup, grilled skewers, and bánh mì from longtime vendors. Nightlife in Biên Hòa #
Biên Hòa’s nightlife is a working-town mix: mostly quán nhậu (beer-and-grub joints), karaoke parlors, and a handful of hotel bars rather than a packed club district. Most bars and casual beer stalls wind down around midnight, but karaoke rooms and some clubs stay open until 2-4 AM. Dress is informal for local spots; smart-casual works for hotel lounges and the few upscale venues.
Practical tips: carry cash (many smaller places don’t take cards), use Grab or a reputable taxi late at night, and helmet up if you’re on a motorbike - traffic can be unpredictable after dark. Watch your drink and belongings in crowded places, order bottled drinks if unsure, and agree on karaoke room rates or cover charges up front to avoid surprises.

Shopping in Biên Hòa #
Biên Hòa is a working-class, industrial city where shopping is practical rather than glamorous. You won’t find high-fashion streets like central Ho Chi Minh City, but you will find lively wet markets, efficient supermarkets and a single full-service mall for name-brand goods. The best finds are inexpensive clothing, household goods and fresh produce - and food stalls that are worth sampling.
Bargaining is part of the market experience: start low (offer around 40-60% of the asking price), be friendly, and expect to meet in the middle. Always carry small bills and cash for markets - many stalls don’t accept cards. Inspect electronics and clothing carefully before buying; returns are uncommon at market stalls. Practical tip: shop markets in the morning for the freshest produce, and visit the mall or supermarkets if you need fixed prices, air-conditioning, or reliable receipts.

Living in Biên Hòa #
Long-term stays in Vietnam typically start on an e-visa (30‑day single‑entry e‑visa via the government portal, fee USD ≈25) or embassy-issued tourist/business visas; nationals of some countries have visa exemptions-check your passport rules. For multi‑month residence you’ll generally need a business (DN) visa sponsored by an employer, or obtain a work permit and then a Temporary Residence Card (TRC), which grants longer stays (often 1-3 years) for employees and investors.
Housing in Biên Hòa is budget-friendly compared with Ho Chi Minh City: one‑bedroom apartments in central wards commonly rent for about 4-6 million VND/month; shared rooms (phòng trọ) start from ~1.5 million VND/month. Private international health insurance is recommended for foreigners (plans commonly range from about USD 500-2,000+ per year depending on coverage and age). For specialist or advanced care many residents travel to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City (Cho Ray, FV Hospital).

Digital Nomads in Biên Hòa
Biên Hòa is a low‑cost, practical base for remote work if you value lower rents and proximity to industrial employers; it lacks a large native digital‑nomad scene, so most nomads rely on cafés, mall workspaces or hotel business centres. There is no special digital‑nomad visa-visitors use the 30‑day e‑visa (≈USD 25), embassy tourist/business visas, or longer-term DN/business visas sponsored by employers.
Internet is sufficient for most remote work: urban fiber plans commonly deliver 50-150 Mbps (FPT, Viettel, VNPT) at around 200k-400k VND/month, and mobile 4G/5G packages are affordable for backup.
