Bharhut

Bharhut is an ancient Buddhist stupa site in Madhya Pradesh noted for its stone railings and carved reliefs that illustrate scenes from early Buddhist lore. The site’s decorative sculptures are among the earliest known Indian depiction of Buddhist narratives and donor inscriptions.

The complex originally comprised a central stupa encircled by ornate railings and gateway elements carved in high relief, with inscriptions that help date the work to the early historic period. Many of the original sculptural fragments were removed in the 19th century and are now housed in national museums where they are key objects for study.

Archaeological and epigraphic evidence places the construction and principal decoration of the site in the centuries around the 2nd to 1st century BCE, with later phases of repair and reuse. Bharhut is located in northern Madhya Pradesh and is accessible from nearby district towns.
