Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves
Archaeological Site Series of Buddhist grottoes with ancient wall paintings
A cluster of Buddhist cave grottoes in the Flaming Mountains near Turpan, Bezeklik preserves painted mural fragments and carved niches from Silk Road-era communities; visitors study the murals and regional history.
The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are a group of Buddhist cave temples in the Turpan region of Xinjiang, China, known for wall paintings and murals spanning roughly the 5th to 14th centuries. They form part of the Silk Road’s religious heritage in the region.
The site consists of a valley of carved grottoes with surviving painted reliefs and murals that depict Buddhas, bodhisattvas and donors in Central Asian styles. Many original murals were removed or damaged during the 20th century; surviving examples remain in the caves and in museum collections.
Carved and decorated over many centuries, the caves reflect Buddhist devotional practices and artistic exchange along the Silk Road from the early medieval period through Mongol times. The site declined after the spread of Islam in the region and saw scholarly and conservation interest from the 19th century onward.
Set in the Mutou Valley area east of the city of Turpan in Xinjiang, the caves sit in a dry, low-lying basin known as the Turpan Depression and are approached from the local road network around Turpan.

Tips for Visiting Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves #
- Go early in the morning to avoid both the heat of Turpan's basin and the large coach groups that arrive later in the day; mornings also give better light for the cliff‑face niches.
- Combine a visit to Bezeklik with nearby attractions - the Flaming Mountains and Tuyoq (Tuyuk) village are close by and visiting them together gives better context for the grottoes.
- Don't expect all original murals in situ: many frescoes were removed or damaged in the 20th century and important fragments are now in museums abroad, so visit regional museums if you want to see relocated panels and detailed study displays.
Best Time to Visit Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves #
Visit in spring (Apr-Jun) or autumn (Sep-Oct) to avoid the extreme summer heat common in this part of Xinjiang.
