Berlin Hauptbahnhof
Area Germany's main railway station with modern glass concourse
Berlin Hauptbahnhof functions as the city’s main rail hub; travelers use its multi-level glass concourse for long-distance ICE trains, regional connections and quick access to the Reichstag and government district.
Berlin Hauptbahnhof is the city’s principal railway station and a major rail hub in Germany, operating multilevel platforms for long-distance, regional and S-Bahn services beneath a large glass roof.
The station’s arrangement separates long-distance through-platforms from regional and commuter services on different levels, facilitating transfers and cross-city routes. The concourse contains shops and passenger facilities and links to tram and bus connections at street level.
Built as part of Berlin’s rail-modernisation programme, the station opened in 2006 and replaced several older termini to act as a central through-station for the reconfigured rail network.
It sits close to the government district and the Spree River in central Berlin, providing direct rail links across Germany and to neighbouring countries.
- Opening and design: The station opened in 2006 and is a multilevel through-station that connects long-distance, regional and urban rail services under a large glass-and-steel roof.
What to See #
- Long-distance platforms (upper level): Upper-level long-distance platforms carry intercity and high-speed trains and run perpendicular to the lower-level tracks to enable cross-city through-routing.
- Regional and S-Bahn platforms (lower level): Lower-level platforms serve regional, S-Bahn and local services and are integrated with the station's concourse for transfers between services and tram or bus connections at street level.
How to Get to Berlin Hauptbahnhof #
Berlin Hauptbahnhof is Berlin’s main rail hub - arrive directly by long‑distance (ICE, IC), regional and local trains. The station is served by the S‑Bahn (look for services to “Berlin Hbf”); many regional buses also stop at Europaplatz in front of the station. By car you reach it via Invalidenstraße / Bundesstraße B96a from central Berlin; the station sits on the Spree in Mitte and is within a short taxi or bus ride of other central landmarks.
Tips for Visiting Berlin Hauptbahnhof #
- Visit early in the morning or late evening for the best light on the station's glass atrium and far fewer commuters; the south side (Washingtonplatz) is the easiest arrival point for the main concourse and long pedestrian bridges that give good viewing angles.
- If you want to photograph train movements and the station's multi-level track layout, head up to the pedestrian bridge/upper concourse rather than staying at street level-many visitors miss the layered view of platforms and the Spree.
- To avoid the busiest periods, skip weekday rush hours (07:00-09:30 and 16:00-19:00) and use regional trains that call on the lower platforms if your aim is a quieter arrival or departure.
Best Time to Visit Berlin Hauptbahnhof #
Best visited outside weekday rush hours (and avoid summer peak if you want fewer crowds).
