Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a large hillside park in Kassel, Hesse, Germany, famous for its monumental Baroque and Romantic landscape architecture centered on the Hercules monument. The park combines terraces, cascades, artificial ruins and a neoclassical palace in a designed sequence down the hill.

Visitors primarily come for the monumental waterworks that run from the Hercules plateau down a long cascade and waterfall to the Wilhelmshöhe Palace, the romantic 18th-century Löwenburg mock-ruin, and panoramic views from the hilltop. The park’s staged water displays operate on designated days and draw large public audiences when active.

The park was laid out from the late 17th century and substantially developed through the 18th and 19th centuries under the Landgraves and later rulers of Hesse-Kassel. Its combination of engineered water features, monumental sculpture and picturesque elements reflects evolving landscape-design ideas of those periods.

Bergpark sits on the western edge of Kassel city in north-central Germany; the Hercules monument crowns the park’s highest point and the palace lies at the lower, urban edge, making the site easily reachable from the city centre.
